Text Editor Basics and Tricks

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of all functions, but to list the most commonly used ones.

Row 1

Preview - Shows a preview of what the document will look like once it has been saved.
Bold - Bold text
Italics - Italics text
Underline - Underline text
Alignment options - left, right, center
Paragraph menu - commonly used options

  • Heading 1

  • Heading 2

  • Heading 3

  • Paragraph


Font size - Adjust the size of the font.  (Can be usefull if you are pasting in text and it is not fitting inside of the window)

Row 2

Cut, copy, paste - You can also use keyboard commands inside of the text editor;

  • Windows (ctrl+x, ctrl+c, ctrl+v);
  • MAC (Command+x, Command+c, Command+v)

Binoculars - Use the binoculars if you need help finding a word in the document
A->B - Find and replace
Bullet points or numbered list
Undo & Redo - (Cntrl+z, Cntrl+y) or (Command+z, Command+y)
Chain "link" - This allows you to insert a link to a url.

  1. Highlight the text that you want to link
  2. Click on the link button
  3. In the pop-up window, type in the url in the Link URL box
  4. Click on Insert

Broken "link" - This allows you to remove a link from the document

  1. Select the text that is linked (You can also "select all" and remove all links at the same time)
  2. Click on the unlink button

Tree - Insert an image

  1. Click on the tree button
  2. Type in the url of the location of the image in the "Image URL" box
  3. If your image is on your computer but not on the internet, you will need to upload your image first.  See Here.
  4. Click on Insert

HTML - Allows you to insert or edit html. 

 

Row 3

A - Change text color
ab - Change background color
Table Options

  • Insert a table - Choose how many columns and rows (You can also click this button to adjust table properties after it has been created)
  • Table row properties
  • Table cell properties

- Horizontal ruler (see the line below)


Eraser - If you are wanting to remove formatting for all or specific text, select the text and then click the eraser button.
Window - Edit the document in full screen. Note: You will not be able to save your document until you exit full screen mode.

Common issues -

Return key = double space
Shift + Enter key = single space

If you have a table and it is not fitting into the window, open up the table properties and enter 100% in the width box.

If you are trying to input formatted text and it does not keep the formatting, you will need to use the pre tags.

  1. Click on the HTML button
  2. Inside of the pop-up window, type in the letters pre in between the <> symbols.
  3. Type or paste in your formatted text
  4. After all formatted text has been entered, type in /pre in between the <> symbols.
  5. Click update on the pop-up window
