RunnerSpace respects the intellectual property rights of others and expects users of our site to do the same.  We will respond to notices of alleged copyright infringement that comply with applicable law and are properly provided to us.  If you are unsure whether you hold rights to a particular work, please consult an attorney or another adviser as RunnerSpace cannot provide legal advice.  We reserve the right to remove content alleged to be infringing without prior notice, at our sole discretion, and without liability to you.  In appropriate circumstances, RunnerSpace will also terminate a user's account if the user is determined to be a repeat infringer.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when copy/pasting copyrighted material:

  • Photographs - Always get permission to use a photo.  In general, the photographer and not the subject of a photograph is the actual rights holder of the resulting photograph.  An exception to this rule might be if the photographer were hired by a company to provide photos of an event, at which point the photographer and/or the company might be the rights holder or shared rights holders.  It's always important and of good practice to confirm a rights holder and include their information along with the photo you are uploading.  When pasting a photo into a news article, be sure to include the photographer's name, company, website, etc. (per the preference of the photographer) in the Description field of the photo.  Click here to read our Photo Upload tutorial.
  • News/Blogs - Including small amounts of original written content while linking to its source is common practice in web media.  Typically 10% of the original article can be included in your article along with a link to the original source.  Articles that have been mostly or entirely copied and pasted into a new article, with or without reference to the original author will not be tolerated unless authority to duplicate an original article given by the original author can be provided.

  • Results - Timing Companies and results providers always need to be referenced along with any official results listing that is being uploaded to RunnerSpace.  This is a standing rule in the industry that is always applied aside from instances when no timing company is provided.

  • Embedded Videos - Embedded videos or often include information that covers your obligation to refer to the rights holder.  However, it's always good and common practice to include the name of the original uploader or their username on the origination site (i.e. a user name on YouTube), the original upload date, and any pertinent information regarding copyrighted material included in the original description of the video.  Click here to read our Video Upload / Embed Tutorial.

  • User Uploaded Videos - Videos uploaded directly to RunnerSpace follow many of the same guidelines as photos.  Typically the videographer, not subject in the video, is the rights holder of the video.  Obvious exceptions are videos of events with copyright restrictions.  This could be any event where video rights have been bought or sold to a company who then owns the rights to all video taken of or within the event.  Think along the lines of any major championship event or any event broadcast on television or the web.  Videos taken at your local track meet are typically safe to upload without concern for copyright, but it's always safe and of good practice to check with the event director to ensure there are no copyright restrictions in place at that event.

Please also be advised that using a company or business name, logo, or other trademark-protected materials in a manner that may mislead or confuse others with regard to its brand or business affiliation may be considered a trademark policy or copyright violation.

Bottom line: always be mindful of content that was not originally created by yourself (the uploader), refer to original providers of the content, and limit the amount of written material you directly copy and paste to 10% of the total volume of the article.  RunnerSpace navigates an intricate network of rights holders to ensure that all content uploaded by RunnerSpace is provided in good faith and with reference to original rights holders.  For your own protection, please do the same.
