Some quick, important specs before we get started:

  • Supported video formats: .mov, .mp4, etc.
  • Size: No limit, but is effected by internet speed.
  • Quality: Our system supports HD quality
  • Aspect Ratio: 16:9 is best, all are supported but may not fill the video player to the edges.

Uploading a Video

1. Be sure to be logged in.  Click here for our Getting Started guide.

2. Click Upload Video on menu bar. An "Upload a Video" box will pop up.

  • TIP: Multitab Uploading: You can upload more than one video at a time by right-clicking on Upload Video and selecting "open in new tab." Only users with VERY fast internet and hard-line (ethernet cord from computer to wall jack) should attempt this.  We did this at the Olympic Trials while uploading hundreds of videos on SMOKIN' fast internet!

3. Title (Required)

Examples of consistent titling: Here are some examples of how we like to title our videos. Consistency keeps you organized and searchable!

  • Gender Event Heat - Meet Year
  • Mens 5000 Heat 2 - USA Championships 2012
  • Womens 100 Hurdles Final - World Championships 2011
  • Boys 5000 Invitational - High School Cross Country Invitational 2010
  • Girls 50 yard Ages 5-6 - All-Comers Meet 2009
  • Jim O'Brien Arcadia Coach - Nike Cross Nationals 2012

4. Categories and Folders

  • Category (Required)
  • Select Video Folder - TIP: These are the videos folders you can create on your profile page. Keep yourself organized with folders! "Misc" is your default video folder.
  • Sport
  • Choose College if all collegiate levels are represented.

5. Tags

  • Use tags that apply to the video, like where it was shot or what meet it was shot at
  • We like to use tags like these:
    olympic-trials usatf nick-symmonds otc-elite
  • Click here to see our tutorial on Attaching / Tagging / #Hashtags Basics

6. Description (Required)

  • We like to put results of the race here. This is also a good place to link to the event page or another website that may be relevent to the video.  Here is a good example.  We also like to link to other relevent videos in the description, i.e. coaches clinics.  An example of that is here

7. Upload and Creation Dates (Required)

  • Upload date and time is when your video will appear on RunnerSpace. Default is current date and time.  If you choose to upload it to a later date, your video will not be viewable until that date and time (good for if you're not allowed to release a video until a certain date and time!).  If you choose a past date, it will seem as if your video was uploaded in the past (good for if you're uploading really old video footage!).

8. Attachments

Click it!

  • Attaching your video to the event (We bet we've already created one for your meet!) or a group (like your track club, if team members are racing in the video) is important in spreading your video beyond your own profile and sharing it with the running community.  You can be a vital part of community event coverage just by attaching your videos to event and group pages we have already created! Read more about attaching here

9. Click Upload or click Embed

  • Upload is for your own videos on your computer.  Embed is to pull a video from another website (like YouTube or Vimeo) onto RunnerSpace.  When you click embed, follow the instructions given.  Here is an example of the code you will copy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49Fwxo50ZiI

10. After clicking upload, click Browse

11. Select your video and click Open ("Open" on a Mac).

12. Click Upload

13. Sit still, do nothing.  A progress percentage will appear.

14. After the progress percentage hits 100%, the page will refresh and inform you that your video has been uploaded. Congratulations!  Your video is now on RunnerSpace!  Do it again!

15. Add your own thumbnail image.

  • Our servers will automatically select an image from your video to use as the thumbnail for your video, but if you want a more specific image, a frame of the starting line, someone smiling, a logo, etc. then you can upload that image now.  Select "Choose File," find the image on your computer, then click "Upload."  Your thumbnail image will now be used for your video.
  • TIP: we like to take screenshots of a favorite moment in our videos and frame the shot to be the exact size of the video, that way, the thumbnail is ensured to be the same size and shape of the video.
